As a surfer, you couldn’t ask for much more than what Komune Bali offers. The resort sits only metres from the world famous Keramas. If you are quick enough, you could literally be lazing poolside one minute and in the tube the next. It truly does give poolside perfection a new meaning.
The traditional surf season in Bali has always been thought of as the Dry Season. This stretches from May through to September, when the trades predominantly blow East to West. This is good for the better-known waves on the western side of the Bukit Peninsula, But Keramas, being located on Bali’s east coast, faces the opposite direction. Here you’ll find favourable winds during the Wet Season, which runs from October to April. Bare in mind however, this is only a guide and there are still days of good surf to be had year round.
Keramas itself is a powerful and hollow right-hander, breaking over a mix of coral and rocks. It can be surfed at a variety of sizes, from triple overhead down to just a few feet. When it’s small, Keramas is a funpark. But when it’s packing some size you can expect a thick and deep tube section on take off. If you’re lucky enough to make it through, a run of perfect high-performance sections will greet you. Here you’re only limited by your ability, as they are suited to everything from basic turns to full-rotation airs.
As it’s such a good wave, you can expect healthy crowds at Keramas. Your best bet is to have one less Bintang the night before and hit it early or book a night sessions. Komune Bali offers a world first permanent night surfing installation right in front of the resort. You can enjoy the amazing spectacle of surfers battling the waves at night, or even book a night surf for yourself under powerful floodlights.
Bookings ensure there are only 6 surfers sharing the waves each night, so you can enjoy the powerful right-hand reef breaks off Keramas reef without the crowds. The Night surf shows are on every night from 7 pm to midnight, as well as 4 am to 6 am for those who like a truly early morning surf.
If you can’t abstain, there are a number of nearby set-ups that should do the trick. Some of the better-known waves within a scooter ride from Komune Bali include Sanur, Serangan, Nusa Dua and Green Balls. There are also whispers of quality unnamed spots close by, but it’s up to you to seek these out.
